LFC envisions lasting policy change that advances equity, equal access, and social justice for all. Our eight-month Leaders Fellowship develops and trains diverse emerging and recognized community leaders who share this vision to advance such progress. Senator Cory Booker grew up in Northern New Jersey and received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Stanford University. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and went on to study at the University of Oxford, and then Yale Law School, where he graduated in 1997. He moved to Newark after law school and started a nonproit organization to provide legal services for low-income families. From 2006-2013, he served as Newark’s mayor. During his tenure, the city experienced economic growth, an overall decline in crime, and the expansion of a ordable housing, green spaces and educational opportunities. In October 2013, he won a special election to represent New Jersey in the United States Senate. In November 2014, he was re-elected to a full six-year term.
As New Jersey’s Junior Senator, Cory Booker has emerged as a national leader in the effort to fix our broken criminal justice system and end mass incarceration, advocate for economic policy that expands opportunity and champion for increased access to healthcare and lower costs to name a few. Today, he sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee, the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, and the Small Business Committee.
2022 LFC Class Representative Triné Nelson
Selected by the participants of the LFC Leaders Fellowship to represent them at this special event, Triné has built a career working in, and around education. She began her career by helping youth in the foster care and juvenile justice systems to obtain job skills training in preparation for them to enter the workforce.
Her understanding of the integral relationship between education and community involvement has only grown and she now serves as a curriculum manager at ASU.
Triné is an active community volunteer, focusing her time on strengthening public education and schools in her community. She believes that by providing supportive educational environments to our youth, we build a foundation that allows for the development of skills that will serve students and their community well beyond high school.
Leading For Change provides Arizona diverse leaders with the tools, resources and networks to advance social justice and progressive values in our communities.
